Agent Deployed to the Wrong Instance

Last updated: December 29, 2025

This article explains how to correct a situation where a Cyrisma agent was installed using an incorrect instance URL or installation key, consequently connected to another, unintended instance. The steps below describe how to safely remove the agent and target from the incorrect instance and prepare the endpoint for redeployment to the correct instance.

This guidance applies to standard endpoint agents on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Common Causes

An agent is typically deployed to the wrong instance due to one of the following:

  • An incorrect instance URL or key entered during manual installation

  • An incorrect installation URL or key used in a deployment script

  • Reuse of a script from a different instance without updating values

Before redeploying the agent, always verify that both the instance URL and installation key match the intended instance.

Scenario 1: Agent Was Not Autoprovisioned

  1. Navigate to Admin > Scan Agents in the instance where the agent was incorrectly deployed.

  2. Locate the agent under the Provision or Update Agents section.

  3. Click Provision to provision the agent into the instance.

Provisioning creates a corresponding target entry under Admin > Targets.

  1. Navigate to Admin > Targets.

  2. Locate the newly created target associated with the agent.

  3. Edit the target and delete it.

When the target is deleted, both the target and its associated scan agent are removed from the instance.

This action:

  • Does not uninstall the agent from the endpoint

  • Does not affect any other instances

After deleting the target, the agent must be manually uninstalled from the host machine.

Scenario 2: Agent Was Autoprovisioned

  1. Navigate directly to Admin > Targets in the incorrect instance.

  2. Locate the target created by the autoprovisioned agent.

  3. Edit the target and delete it.

When the target is deleted, both the target and its associated scan agent are removed from the instance.

The agent remains installed on the endpoint but is no longer associated with the instance.

After deleting the target, the agent must be manually uninstalled from the host machine.

Required Final Step: Reinstall the Agent

Once the agent and target have been removed from the incorrect instance:

  • Uninstall the agent from the endpoint

  • Reinstall the agent using the correct instance URL

  • Use the correct installation key and URL for the intended instance

Important Note

  • Deleting a target only removes the agent and target from the instance; it does not perform an endpoint uninstall.
