What Happens If a Device Name Changes After Agent Installation

Last updated: December 23, 2025

If a device name is changed after the Cyrisma agent has already been installed, the updated name will not be automatically reflected in the Cyrisma platform. This behavior is expected and is related to how the agent uniquely identifies the device.

This article explains why device name changes are not detected and what action is required to ensure accurate reporting.

Why Cyrisma Does Not Detect Device Name Changes

When the Cyrisma agent is installed, it binds the device identity to the original system name at install time. This identity is locked to internal agent components and is used to ensure consistent and secure tracking of the device across:

  • Vulnerability scans

  • Baseline scans

  • Reporting and dashboards

Because the agent relies on this fixed identifier, subsequent operating system–level name changes are not detected or updated automatically.

Impact on Scanning and Reporting

If a device is renamed after agent installation:

  • The original device name continues to appear in Cyrisma

  • Rerunning scans does not update the displayed name

  • Reporting and dashboards continue to reference the original name

This behavior applies across all scan types and reports.

What to Do If a Device Name Changes

To have Cyrisma recognize the updated device name:

  1. Uninstall the existing agent from the device

  2. Reinstall the Cyrisma agent after the device name change

Reinstalling the agent creates a new device identity that reflects the updated name and ensures accurate association for future scans and reporting.

Additional Notes

  • Vulnerability or baseline scans alone cannot update the device name

  • Device renaming often occurs during reimaging or system refresh workflows, which typically include agent reinstallation

  • In environments where device renaming is common, include agent reinstallation as part of the standard process

Summary

Cyrisma does not automatically detect device name changes after agent installation. To ensure the correct device name appears in scans and reports, the agent must be uninstalled and reinstalled after the name change. This design ensures consistent and secure device identification across the platform.
